Snake Avoidance for Service Dogs
We teach snake avoidance the same way we teach medical alerts. What does the dog do when he smells that smell, sees that sight or hears that sound. We do not scare a dog or cause pain to force him to avoid a snake in fear. Fear is unpredictable and your dog could actually attack the snake or run right into another bad situation trying to avoid the snake in front of him.
Teaching the dog what to do is much more reliable and longer lasting.
Snake Avoidance Prerequisites and Equipment
There are no prerequisites for this class.
You will need some kind of snake smell – skin, solution, dead snake. You can get snake skin from any fletcher (person who make bows and arrows) as it is often used to decorate bows. You do not need an entire skin, only a piece about 6 inches by 2 inches. I have a supply of snake skin and solution.
If you are training for a different animal, Amazon has a great supply of different scents you can purchase. If they don’t have the scent you need, let me know and I will find some. Smell is the most important factor in training for animal avoidance.
For snake sound you can acquire rattlesnake rattles just about anywhere, just string them on twine and shake as necessary. There are also many phone applications for animal sounds. The one for snakes that I have has 13 different rattle sounds.
